  • Al Shields, Bentley’s 1st Athletic Director and Basketball Coach, Dies at 80

    Elwood N. “Al” Shields, the father of Bentley University athletics, passed away Tuesday afternoon at the age of 80. According to the family, the cause was complications from Alzheimer’s. After coaching the basketball team during a non-varsity season in 1962-63, Shields was named the first athletics director and basketball coach at what was then Bentley College in 1963. He remained as basketball coach until 1978 and was the college’s athletics director until October 1991.
