WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley and Roberts Wesleyan battled to a 1-1 tie in hot conditions in a non-conference matchup on Wednesday afternoon. The Falcons remained unbeaten on the season with the tie and are now 2-0-1.
Freshman Ronan Fitzpatrick (Coventry, Conn./East Catholic) put Bentley in front with his first career goal in the 30th minute, and had a couple of chances in the second half to extend its lead, but the Redhawks got the tying goal on a penalty kick in the 80th minute to send the match into OT tied 1-1.
Fitzpatrick's goal came off a corner kick by Connor Mote (Lisle, Ill/Benet), that center back Adam Watkins (McConnells, S.C./Clover) got a touch on inside the box. The ball then came to Fitzpatrick, who blasted a shot from the left corner into the upper right corner of the net for a 1-0 Bentley lead.
The Falcons had a penalty kick saved in the 50th minute, and just minutes later a shot by senior Julian Stewart (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxboro) hit the post and just stayed out.
Roberts Wesleyan would take advantage and saw midfielder Daniel Maxwell convert from the penalty spot in the 80th minute to tie the score.
Bentley had by far the best chance of overtime, which came in the final seconds of the second overtime. Off a corner kick with just 10 seconds remaining, Mote had a header that seemed headed for the back of the net just blocked off the line by a Redhawks defender to seal the 1-1 tie.
With its non-conference schedule now complete, Bentley will be back on the field on Sept. 11 at 7:00 pm to open NE10 play against Assumption in Worcester.
