WORCESTER, Mass. – The 2017 Gompei Invitational, hosted by Worcester Polytechnic Institute, concluded Sunday with two members of the Bentley University swimming and diving teams earning second-place finishes.
One of those was senior Emily Niemiec (Meriden, Conn./Francis T. Maloney HS), who added the 100 yard individual medley to her collection of school records, which already included the 200 IM, 400 IM, 200 breaststroke and four relays.
Niemiec swam the 100 IM in 1:00.24, breaking the mark Kaitlin McGahie set at the same meet last year by nine-hundredths of a second.
Bentley's other second was achieved by sophomore Jarod Yoshihara (Irvine, Calif./University HS) with a time of 1:54.36 in the 200 backstroke.
Other Sunday highlights included thirds from senior Anne Warren (Ellicott City, Md./Mt. Hebron HS) in the 200 butterfly (2:08.79) and the combination of sophomore Caroline Logozzo (Wethersfield, Conn./Wethersfield HS) and Ryann Driscoll (Marblehead/Marblehead HS) in the 25 yard synchronized diving relay.
In the 200 backstroke, junior Kate Kaduboski (Dedham/Dedham HS) was fifth in 2:06.93 and classmate Melissa Viator (Lubbock, Texas/Lubbock HS) followed in sixth (2:07.29).
Kaduboski and Niemiec combined with sophomore Paige MacNeil (Branford, Conn./Branford HS) and freshman Emily LaRovere (Lynnfield/Phillips Exeter HS) to finish sixth in the 400 free relay in 3:38.22.
In the men's 400 free relay, Bentley finished fifth with seniors Chris Vukas (Randoph, N.J./Randolph HS) and Jonny Boains (Unionville, Conn./Farmington HS), sophomore Alper Alkaya (Milan, Italy) and junior Ryan McGeary (Paramus, N.J./ Bergen Catholic HS) posting a 3:11.38.
Bentley's other top ten finish during the final day was a ninth from Boains in the 100 M (54.88).
As a team, the Falcons finished fifth among 13 teams during the three-day meet with 2,915 points. Rowan University edged WPI for the championship, 4,920-4,858, and also in front of the Falcons were Bryant University (4,572.5) and Stevens Institute of Technology (4,003).
Bentley will wrap up the 2017 portion of the schedule next Sunday with a home meet against Norwich University.
