WALTHAM, Mass. – The Bentley University Falcons will be seeking their third consecutive Northeast-10 Conference Men's Tennis playoff championship Saturday when they take on regular season champion Merrimack College.
The match is scheduled for 1 pm at North Andover High School. In case of inclement weather, it will be played at 3:30 at the Willows Racquet and Tennis Center in North Andover.
It'll be the third straight year that the two programs will meet in the conference playoffs with coach Alex Wong's Bentley team having won the previous two. The Falcons prevailed 5-0 in the 2010 championship match and 5-4 in the semis a year ago. In last year's final, they edged Southern New Hampshire in another 5-4 match.
Five-four was also the score when Bentley and Merrimack squared off April 12 in a match that decided the regular season title. Playing inside at the Woburn Racquet Club, the Warriors took a 2-1 lead after doubles and captured second, third and fourth singles, with the final two going to three sets before being decided.
Bentley's winners in singles against Merrimack were junior Lucas Wever (Sao Paulo, Brazil) at number one, senior Alex Spycher (Sarasota, Fla./Saint Stephens Episcopal HS) at number five and sophomore Andrew Waddington (Granby, Conn./Granby Memorial HS) at number six. Spycher and Waddington were both first-team All-Conference selections at their respective flights and Wever was a second-team honoree at number one.
In the semis earlier this week, Bentley pulled out a 5-4 victory over Southern New Hampshire and Merrimack cruised to a 5-0 sweep of Stonehill.
Bentley (15-5 overall) and Merrimack (16-7), which will be looking for its first NE-10 playoff title, are both likely to receive NCAA Division II tournament bids next week, regardless of the outcome Saturday. In the most recent East Region rankings, the Warriors were fourth and the Falcons were fifth.
