SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The eight members of the Bentley University outdoor track and field teams who made the trip west for the UC San Diego Triton Invitational all turned in solid performances with the list of highlights featuring the seventh school record of the year for sophomore Stephanie Mattson (Smithfield,. R.I./Smithfield HS).

The latest came in the 400 meters  as she took possession of the Bentley standard, one held by All-America Amy Varsell since the 2011 Raleigh Relays. Mattson broke Varsell's record by 0.75 seconds as she finished eighth of 41 overall in 57.08 seconds. That bettered her personal best by 1.71 second and moved her to number three on the Northeast-10 Conference's  2017 outdoor performance list.

Mattson also improved on her PR in the triple jump, placing ninth of 21 in 36'8.25". That was close to two feet further than she had ever jumped before and as was the case in the 400, third best in the NE10 this spring. Her trip to the coast also included finishing 11th of 44 in the long jump (17'10").

Senior Julia Morena (Boylston, Mass./Tahanto Reg. HS) led all the way en route to an easy win in the 5,000 meters. She finished in 18:01.17, third best in the NE10 this year, and won by 21.50 seconds over runner-up Nikesha Eagleman of Central Arizona.

Also in the 5,000, senior Katie Burke (Braintree, Mass./Braintree HS) was 12th of 19 in 19:04.14.

In the men's javelin, junior Holt Sihvonen (Lebanon, Conn./Lyman Memorial HS) continued to excel with his throw of 209'4" second best in school history and in the NE10 this spring, trailing only his 214'10" achieved earlier this month. He was eighth of 35 overall and second among collegians, trailing only Marian Spannowsky of UCLA.

Junior Nick Skarin (Sunapee, N.H./Sunapee HS) achieved a PR and the fifth-best 800 meter time in the NE10 this season with a time of 1:54.10. He was 13th of 55 overall and bettered his previous best by 1.23 seconds.

In the men's 1500, seniors Tim Bolick (Hopkinton, Mass./Hopkinton HS) and Nik Haas (Ramsey, N.J./Ramsey HS) were 17th and 26th, respectively, in a field of 67. Bolick finished in 3:59.76 and Haas followed in 4:03.14. On the women's side, junior Marianne Bartolotta (Wantagh, N.Y./Holy Trinity HS) was 23rd of 75 in 4:55.11.

Next Saturday, Bentley will be at Stonehill for the Skyhawk Invitational. That will also be the site for the Northeast-10 Championships in two weeks.
