COLCHESTER, Vt. – Senior right-hander Curt Echo (Shelburne, Vt.) scattered eight hits during a complete game effort as St. Michael's College topped visiting Bentley University, 3-1, in Northeast-10 Conference Northeast Division baseball Friday afternoon at Doc Jacobs Field.
The game was scoreless until the sixth when the Purple Knights picked up a pair of runs off Bentley junior lefty Evan Walsh (Arlington, Mass/Arlington Catholic HS), who had taken a two-hitter into the inning.
St. Michael's sophomore catcher Aiden Burton (Milford, Conn.) led off with a single down the right field line and was sacrificed to second base. A single to right by freshman center fielder Matt Downing (Hanover, Mass.) drove in Burton with the game's first run and Downing later scored on a two-out single to right center by senior DH Alex Holt (Framingham, Mass.).
Bentley cut the lead in half in its next at bat. Senior catcher Bryan Rocha (Rehoboth, Mass./ Dighton-Rehoboth HS) doubled to left center and scored on an infield single by sophomore DH Nick Neshe (Waltham, Mass./Waltham HS).
The Purple Knights restored its lead to two in the bottom of the seventh and once again, Burton was involved. Following back-to-back singles by sophomore third baseman Peter Bocchino (Saugus, Mass,) and freshman second baseman Joe Robertson (Essex Junction, Vt.), Burton doubled to left center to plate Bocchino and chase Walsh from the game.
Echo, who notched his first win in six decisions, retired the final four Falcons of the game and finished with four strikeouts. Walsh, in his 6.1 innings, allowed eight hits and three runs with three strikeouts.
Neshe and senior second baseman Zachary Littman (Abington, Mass./Abington HS) each had two hits for Bentley (14-23, 5-10 NE-10 Northeast). Burton, Bocchino and Holt all had two for the Purple Knights (4-24, 3-12 NE-10 Northeast).
The two teams will face each other again Saturday in Vermont with a doubleheader starting at noon.
