MANCHESTER, N.H. – Freshman Sam Powell (Granby, Mass./Holyoke Catholic HS) was the top finisher for the Bentley University men's cross country team during Saturday's season-opening 31st-annual Shacklette Invitational at Saint Anselm College.

Powell, whose sister Barb ran for the Bentley women's team from 2006-09, was 13th overall with a time of 28:35.3 for 8,000 meters. Classmate Tom Dean (Portland, Maine/Deering HS) was also in the top 20 for the Falcons, finishing 19th in his collegiate debut in 29:15.1.

The rest of Bentley's top five in the meet were junior Tom Quentin (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and freshmen Chris Haddad (Wakefield, Mass./Wakefield HS) and Sean Perry (Portland, Maine/Deering HS). They were 28th, 30th and 31st, respectively, with times of 30:15.5,30:23.0 and 30:49.6.

Stonehill College cruised to victory with 19 points, the Skyhawks having seven of the top ten finishers. Merrimack took second with 51, and Assumption was third with 74.
