COLCESTER, Vt. – Saint Michael's scored a 5-0 win over Bentley University in the first round of the Northeast-10 Women's Tennis Tournament Monday afternoon. The Purple Knights will meet top-seeded Southern New Hampshire in the semifinals.
Saint Michael's won all three doubles matches and two singles matches to earn the required five points.
The Purple Knights' top doubles pairing of senior Deahna Giguere and sophomore Emily Magee beat sophomores Paulina Sotomayor (San Antonio, Texas/Ronald Reagan) and Rachael Litton (Burlington, Ontario/Nelson) 8-5. In number two doubles, seniors Marran Ranks and Marybeth Ash defeated junior Kara Murphy (Worcester, Pa./Methacton) and senior Aimee Tetu (Brunswick, Maine/Brunswick) 8-3. In number three doubles, junior Emily Ogilvy and sophomore Jean-Marie McGrath knocked off senior Cheryl Martin (Pittsfield, Mass./St. Joseph Central) and junior Brittany Harbert (Boxford, Mass./Masconomet) in a tiebreak, 9-8 (3).
The two singles matches Saint Michael's won were the top-flight match, where Giguere beat Sotomayor 6-2, 6-3, and Ash defeated Litton in the third-flight 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.
Bentley falls to 9-11 overall, while the Purple Knights improve to 13-4.
