WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley scored the final three goals of the game but its rally fell just short as they were defeated by Saint Anselm 10-9 in the quarterfinals of the Northeast 10 Women's Lacrosse Championship.
The Hawks got off to a fast start and led 5-0 after the first 10-plus minutes.
Bentley outscored them 9-5 the rest of the way but its comeback effort ran out of time.
Trailing 10-6 midway through the fourth quarter,
Amanda Davis scored off a pass from
Natalia Dutkewych at the 7:14 mark.
Just over two minutes later Dutkewych scored unassisted to make it a 10-8 game with 5:10 remaining.
The teams traded possessions over the next several minutes which allowed Saint Anselm to drain precious time off the clock. Hawks goalie Elizabeth Driscoll denied a Bentley free position chance with 30 seconds left, one of her 12 saves on the day, to keep it a two-goal game.
After a timeout, Saint Anselm turned the ball over on the ensuing clearing attempt which led to a goal by
Maeve Johnson with one second remaining. But not enough time remained for Bentley to mount another attack after the draw control.
Davis had four goals for the Falcons and Dutkewych had a game-high five points on three goals and two assists.
Saint Anselm will play the top seed Pace in the semifinals on Wednesday.
