BOSTON, Mass. -- Bentley University's Curtis Trueb (Eastchester, N.Y./Eastchester HS) ran to a school-record time in the mile during Saturday's Boston University Terrier Classic, with his time of 4:09.06 provisionally qualifying the sophomore for the NCAA Division II Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Trueb finished sixth in a field of 125 and bettered the former standard, set by Stephan Ramirez at the 2006 New Englands, by 1.33 seconds. It was a personal best by about five seconds and entering this weekend's action, only three Division II runners from across the country had posted a better mile time.
Trueb led for the first 1100 meters, and had split times of 63.3 seconds after 400, 2:05.6 at the half and 3:08.8 through 1200 meters. He closed in 60.3 seconds. Former Georgia standout Ryley Miller captured the event in 4:06.54.
Junior Mike Vatti (Easton, Pa./Easton Area HS) posted a season-best 49.92 second clocking in the 400 meters, finishing 24th in a field of 92.
Personal bests were achieved by four Bentley runners in distance events. Sophomore Craig Robinson (Scarborough, Maine/Scarborough HS) improved on his PR in the 3,000 by four seconds, finishing 32nd of 104 in 8:40.47.
In the 5,000, sophomore John Drago (Avon, Conn./Avon HS) improved on his PR by six seconds, senior Steve Gendron (Lowell/Lowell HS) set a 26-second PR and Teddy Farley (Acton/Acton-Boxboro Reg. HS) bettered his by about 18 seconds. Running in a field of 116, Drago was 46th in 15:10.43 (good for eighth on Bentley's all-time list), Gendron was 68th in 15:23.71, and Farley 74th (15:26.73).
Select members of the team will compete in the Giegengack Invitational at Yale University next Saturday.
