Vatti Double-Winner at Stonehill Invitational

EASTON, Mass. – Bentley University senior Mike Vatti (Easton, Pa./Easton HS) was a double-winner Saturday afternoon during the 11-team 2012 Skyhawk Invitational, held at Stonehill College's W.B. Mason Stadium.

Vatti was first in a field of 43 in the 200 meters, his time of 22.14 seconds a personal best and good for second place on Bentley's all-time outdoor list. He improved on his previous PR by 0.12 seconds, moved up four places on the performance list and finished eight-hundredths of a second in front of runner-up Teague Grubel of Stonehill.

Earlier in the afternoon, Vatti cruised to victory in the 400, finishing in 49.18 seconds with no one else in the 21-runner field within a second of that time.

Junior Bryan Carton (Norwell/Norwell HS) was fourth in the same two events, with times of 22.66 in the 200 and 51.17 in the 400. His 200-meter performance established a new PR.

Also scoring in two events for the Falcons was freshman Anthony Charter (Hubbardstown/ Quabbin Reg. HS), with a third in the long jump (21'11.75") and a fifth in the triple jump (43'5"). His effort in the former was a new personal best and moved him into a tie for fifth on Bentley's all-time list.

Both senior Tom Witherell (Los Alamos, N.M./Los Alamos HS) and junior Sean Maguire (Essex, Vt./Essex HS) improved on their previous personal bests in the 5,000 by over 20 seconds. Witherell was third in 15:18.66 and Maguire fourth, exactly two seconds later.

Freshman Chris Ricci (Coventry, R.I./Coventry HS) was fifth in the javelin with his throw of 159 feet, one inch a new PR, and classmate Nikos Devletoglou (Athens, Greece) tied for fifth in the high jump (5'8.75").

Sophomore Conor Higgins (Randolph, N.J./Randolph HS) was sixth in the 1500 (4:02.71) and Bentley received eighth-place performances from juniors Derek Sit (Wellesley/Wellesley HS) in the 100 (PR 11.38) and Grant Nolan (Concord, N.H./Concord HS) in the 400 hurdles (59.92).

In the team standings, Bentley was sixth of 11 with 62.5 points. Stonehill claimed team honors with 216 and Tufts was second with 136.5.

Next weekend, Bentley will compete in the Larry Ellis Invitational at Princeton and the MIT Invitational.
