Box Score WORCESTER, Mass. – A late goal by senior Dan Keefer (Wayland, Mass./Wayland) made it a one goal game, but Bentley could not find the equalizer as they were beaten by Assumption 7-6 in Northeast-10 men's lacrosse on Saturday.
The Falcons trailed 7-4 with 11:29 left in the fourth quarter after Assumption's Garrett Smith scored his second of the afternoon. But Bentley's Matt Dente (Reading, Mass./Reading) made it 7-5 with a goal at the 8:08 mark.
Neither team scored again for more than seven minutes, until Keefer found the back of the net for the first time this season with 50 ticks left on the clock to make the score 7-6. The Greyhounds though won the ensuing face-off and ran out the clock to hang on for the victory.
A back-and-forth first quarter ended tied 3-3. Assumption had the first two goals and led 2-0 after three-plus minutes of action. But the Falcons then scored twice in a row, from sophomore Bobby Hinds (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) at 6:04 and senior Tim Matheson (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) at 3:58. Sophomore Garrett Smith answered for the Greyhounds just 13 seconds after Matheson's goal, but junior Nick Astarita (Bedford, N.H./Bishop Guertin) tied it up for Bentley with 2:43 left in the quarter.
Assumption got the better of the second quarter with three goals to Bentley's one. Sophomores Ty Martina and Peter Gersbeck gave them a 5-3 lead, only for freshman Matt Brigham (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey) to pull one back for Bentley at the 7:15 mark. But Assumption's Connor Munisteri scored with 2:09 left in the half to give them a 6-4 lead at the break.
Neither team scored in the third quarter.
Sophomore goalie Will Contento made nine saves to earn the win for the Greyhounds, while Bentley's Jarrod Dillon (Braintree, Mass./St. Sebastian's) made his first career start and made eight saves.
The loss drops Bentley's record to 2-7 overall and 2-6 in NE-10 play, while Assumption improves to 2-8 overall and 2-6 in the NE-10. Bentley's next game is Wednesday night at home against Southern New Hampshire.
