Bentley Pushes Adelphi but Falls 8-6 in NE10 Quarterfinals

Box Score

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Bentley held Adelphi without a goal for the final 26:40 of game time, but the Panthers were able to hang on for an 8-6 victory in the quarterfinals of the Northeast-10 Women's Lacrosse Championship on Wednesday afternoon.

The Falcons were the No. 7 seed in the NE10 Championship and are ranked 24th this week by the IWLCA. The Panthers are the No. 2 seed and ranked 5th this week.

Adelphi took an 8-2 lead after a goal by senior Kristina Schweitzer at the 11:40 mark of the third quarter. But that was the final goal of the game for the Panthers as Bentley's defense put the clamps on from that point.

The Falcons began to chip away at the deficit with a goal by sophomore Caroline Affolter (Newburyport, Mass./Central Catholic) just 50 seconds after Schweitzer's goal.

Junior Sydney Lynch (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) then made it an 8-4 game with a goal after taking a feed from grad student Cara McCarthy (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic) at 5:35 of the 3rd quarter.

Bentley caused three turnovers in the third quarter and held them to just one shot on target after Schweitzer's goal, which was saved by goalie Maya Rose (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme).

Bentley's defense continued to shine in the 4th quarter as they caused three turnovers and Rose made a save on Adelphi's first five possessions of the quarter.

After a yellow card on Adelphi, Bentley took advantage of the women-up situation with a goal by McCarthy at the 7:57 mark to make the score 8-5. Affolter then won the ensuing draw control, which led to a free-position shot goal by Kenzie Lupton (Canandaigua, N.Y./Canandaigua) at 7:12 to make the score 8-6.

Bentley then had its chances for more, but Adelphi goalie Emma Lemanski came up with a save on a free-position shot by Maeve Johnson (Duxbury, Mass./Duxbury) and on a shot by Caroline Aufiero (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield).

Johnson had a free-position shot blocked at the 3:06 mark and Lemanski made another save on a shot by Courtney Dermody (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) with 1:53 remaining.

Bentley had one more possession with under a minute remaining after a Panthers turnover, but time eventually ran out.

Rose made nine saves in goal for the Falcons. Fish had a game-high three caused turnovers and Affolter had a game-high six draw controls. McCarthy had four draw controls.

Adelphi advances on to play the No. 3 seed Le Moyne in the semifinals on Saturday.
