No. 21 Bentley Downs No. 2 Florida Southern in Overtime on Lupton's Goal

Box Score

LAKELAND, Fla. – Senior Kenzie Lupton (Canandaigua, N.Y. / Canandaigua Academy) scored 43 seconds into overtime to give No. 21 ranked Bentley a 17-16 upset victory over No. 2 ranked Florida Southern on Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons have now won five straight and improved to 5-1 on the season with a sweep of their Florida trip. They defeated No. 18 St. Leo 13-12 in overtime on Thursday night.

Lupton scored on a free-position shot from the right wing with a shot high and over the stick off Mocs goalie Rylie Rittberg. Senior Hannah Aronowitz (Niskayuna, N.Y./Niskayuna) won the draw control to start overtime and Bentley never lost possession.

The game went to overtime thanks to the efforts of sophomore goalie Ashlee Wargo (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand). She saved a free-position shot from FSC's Lizzy Lynch with one second remaining in regulation.

Wargo made 14 saves on the day with five in the 4th quarter. Three of those saves came in the final five-plus minutes of regulation.

Bentley led 11-7 at halftime as Courtney Dermody (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) led the attack with three goals. Senior Sydney Lynch (Bedford, N.H./Bedford) added a pair of goals in the 1st quarter.

The Falcons then withstood a 7-2 run by the Mocs from the 3rd quarter into the early stages of the 4th quarter. That saw Bentley fall behind for the only time of the game at 14-13 with 10:58 remaining.

But Bentley responded with two goals in quick succession by Amanda Davis (Saunderstown, R.I./La Salle) and Lynch to take the lead back at 15-14 with 8:25 remaining.

A goal by Lupton with 3:56 remaining came in between two goals by FSC, the last by FSC's Lynch with 1:55 left in regulation to tie the game 16-16.

Bentley won the next draw control and had two shots go wide, but the possession resulted in a shot clock violation. That gave FSC the ball with a chance to win, but Wargo's save on Lynch's free-position shot in the final second sent the game to OT.
