GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Jefferson University's Mia Ferrara scored 10:57 into overtime to give the Rams a 2-1 win over Bentley in the first round of the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship on Friday.
The goal came directly off a corner kick that was sent in by Mia Ferrara. The ball arrived in the six-yard box and players for both teams competed for it, allowing the ball to bounce into the net.
Bentley took a 1-0 lead in the 51
st minute on a goal by
Heidi Lawrence.
The goal came as Jefferson tried to play the ball out of its own half, but
Sydney O'Connor made a strong tackle to win possession. She fed a quick pass back to
Jenna Hendriksen who then quickly returned the pass to O'Connor. O'Connor spotted the run of Lawrence and threaded a through ball between two Rams defenders. Lawrence took one touch and blasted a shot to the top left corner for the goal from 15 yards out.
The Falcons held onto that lead for 33 minutes until Jefferson equalized in the 84th minute on a penalty kick goal by Kiery Spatz. That was the first goal Bentley conceded for 559 minutes of game time.
Neither team was able to score over the final six-plus minutes of regulation, or the first 10-minute half of overtime.
Falcons goalkeeper
Claire Ewen made seven saves, while Rams goalkeeper Liv Reddel made five stops.
Abi Hennessey and
Bridget Gleason both had a team-high two shots on goal.
The Falcons, who were making the second NCAA Tournament appearance in program history, see their season come to a close at 8-4-7.
