WALTHAM, Mass. – Junior guard
Cassidy Yeomans (Marion/Tabor Academy) scored a career-high 16 points, most coming from beyond the arc, and dished five assists as Bentley University took care of American International College, 59-41, in Northeast-10 Conference women's basketball Tuesday night on Barbara Stevens Court.
Bentley, the sixth-ranked team in this week's WBCA Division II coaches poll, improved to 6-1 overall and 2-1 NE10. AIC tasted defeat for just the second time this season, falling to 4-2 overall and 0-2 conference.
After the Yellow Jackets scored the game's opening bucket, Bentley went on an 11-0 run that began with the first of Yeomans' four three-pointers, Senior forward
Kylie DuCharme (Wilmington/Wilmington HS), Bentley's top scorer for the season, added five during the early surge.
The opening quarter ended with Bentley up 17-7 after six different Falcons put the ball through the net. AIC, on the other hand, made only three of 14 shots and turned it over five times.
A 15-0 second quarter run pushed the Falcon advantage to a commanding 34-12 with 2:44 left until intermission. Junior post
Ciara Norman (Roebling, N.J./Life Center Academy) had four and Yeomans, graduate forward
Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) and senior guard
Amanda Kabantu (Portland, Maine/Portland HS) all connected from distance.
Bentley started the second half up 34-17 and had a 20-point advantage for almost all of the second half.
Yeomans, who had a career-best nine assists Saturday against Post, made four of her eight shots from downtown and also came up with two steals.
Kabantu was next on the Bentley scoring list with nine points, and she also had five assists and four rebounds.
Whitmore, DuCharme, Norman and sophomore guard
Niya Morgen (Swampscott/St. Mary's HS) all finished with seven points, and Whitmore's night also included eight rebounds and five assists.
Senior Chelsea Reeves (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led AIC with 15 points and senior forward Rhaymi Porter (Scotia, N.Y.) had a game-high 12 rebounds. Sophomore Ruzgar Christina Boyle (Istanbul, Turkey), the conference's leading scorer going in, was held scoreless on 0-for-11 shooting.
The Falcons outshot the visitors 38-26 percent, made twice as many from deep (8-4) and had an 18-5 advantage in assists. AIC committed 17 turnovers, five more than Bentley.
Bentley will conclude its five-game homestand Sunday with a 1:30 pm game against Chestnut Hill.
