BLOOMFIELD, N.J. – Graduate forward
Maggie Whitmore (South Portland, Maine/South Portland HS) netted a game-high 16 points in 23 minutes and six teammates provided between eight and 13 points as Bentley University cruised to its seventh straight win, 86-48, over Bloomfield College in non-conference women's basketball at the BC Gym Saturday afternoon.
Bentley, tied for fifth in this week's WBCA Division II coaches poll, improved to 11-1 overall, the Falcons' best start since a 12-0 to launch the 2018-19 season. Bloomfield dropped to 3-8 overall.
The Falcons took charge over the final five minutes of the opening stanza, outscoring the Bears 19-7 to go up 29-14. Eight different players scored in the first with Whitmore, senior guard
Amanda Kabantu (Portland, Maine/Portland HS), graduate guard
Brooke Obar (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greely HS) and sophomore guard
Niya Morgen (Swampscott, Mass./St. Mary's HS) all finishing the quarter with five.
Bentley also outscored Bloomfield by 15 in the second quarter, this time by a count of 24-9 to take a commanding 30-point advantage into the break, 53-23. Morgen and Whitmore each had five in the second and finished the first half with 10 apiece.
After Bloomfield won the third, coach
C White's Falcons dominated the fourth, 24-7, with the lead peaking at 40, 86-46, in the final minute. Bentley opened the quarter with a 17-3 run to extend a 21-point lead to 35.
Whitmore, in addition to 16 points, had seven rebounds, including five at the offensive end. Morgen finished with 13 points and a career-best nine rebounds, and both junior forward
Ciara Norman (Roebling, N.J./Life Center Academy) and junior guard
Cassidy Yeomans (Marion, Mass./Tabor Academy) had ten. Yeomans also delivered seven assists, and Norman's day included six rebounds.
The Falcons also received nine points and eight rebounds from Kabantu, and eight points from both Obar and senior forward
Kylie DuCharme (Wilmington, Mass./Wilmington HS). DuCharme also contributed seven rebounds, two steals and a block.
Senior guard Tameshia Tucker (Newark, N.J.) led Bloomfield with 15 points, most coming as the result of a trio of three-pointers.
Bentley dominated the rebounds (48-32) and limited the Bears to 26.4 percent shooting. Points in the paint were 42-10 and second-chance points were 14-4.
Following a break for the holidays, the Falcons return to action Jan. 2 at Southern New Hampshire.
