WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley advanced to the Atlantic Hockey championship game with a sweep of Sacred Heart in the semifinals after winning game two, 3-0.
The Falcons will play at Holy Cross in the finals next Saturday night.
It's Bentley's second ever trip to the AHA finals and first since 2006, when they played Holy Cross.
Goaltender
Connor Hasley and the Falcons posted their 11
th shutout of the season and third in four postseason games. Hasley, who made 26 saves on the night, is now tied for the second most shutouts in a single season in NCAA history.
Ethan Leyh bookened the goals by scoring 56 seconds into the game and then iced it with an empty netter with 16 seconds remaining.
Leyh's opening goal came as Bentley built up pressure in the offensive zone and had two good scoring chances denied by SHU's Ajeet Gundarah. Bentley though kept the puck in and Leyh had it behind the goal line. He had a shot from close range blocked but kept the puck and lifted a wrist shot over Gundarah from the slot for the goal.
Hasley and the Falcons continued to smother SHU and limit their scoring chances, with Hasley coming up with big saves when called upon, including a big stop from close range on Marcus Joughin early in the third period.
SHU pulled Gundarah for the extra attacker with 2:16 left but Bentley scored an insurance goal from
Oskar Bakkevig with 1:50 left.
Bakkevig misfired on his initial shot but chased down the rebound and scored along the left boards to make it 2-0.
Leyh then finished it off with another empty netter with 16 seconds remaining to make it 3-0, his second goal of the night and 16
th of the season.
The win was Bentley's 22
nd of the season which is a new program record. Hasley also won his 20
th game of the season which breaks the program's single season record.
