WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley advanced to the Atlantic Hockey semifinals with a 2-0 victory over Canisius to complete the series sweep.
Bentley swept the series with two straight shutouts to bring its total for the season to 10, all with
Connor Hasley in net.
Hasley made 25 saves and was at his best in the 2
nd period with 13 saves. He made seven more in the third period to help Bentley protect its lead.
The 10 shutouts are tied for the third most in a single season in NCAA history.
The teams battled through a tough and hard hitting two periods with no score.
The goal finally came at 3:29 of the third period when
Arlo Merritt jammed home the puck in front of the net off the rebound from a shot by
Oskar Bakkevig in the slot.
The lead stood at 1-0 as the clock wound deeper into the third period. Canisius pulled its goalie Ben Bonisteel for an extra-attacker with 3:16 remaining.
The insurance goal came off the stick of captain
Ethan Leyh with 1:47 left.
Tanner Main won the puck in the defensive zone and passed it ahead to
Kellan Hjartarson who found Leyh in the neutral zone.
Leyh skated over the red line and saw his shot bounce into the empty net for the goal and a 2-0 lead.
The win was the 20
th of the season, the first time Bentley has reached that mark as a Division I program.
They advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 2009. The opponent and location will be determined after the quarterfinals are completed on Sunday.
