WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley denied Mercy on its final possession to secure a 14-13 victory on Saturday afternoon in the Falcons' home opener.
A goal by
Amanda Davis with 1:51 remaining broke a 13-13 tie and gave the Falcons a one goal lead.
Mercy won the ensuing draw control and earned a free position attempt, with the shot by Juliana Talenti going wide.
Mercy scooped up the ground ball to extend the possession, but
Kristy Norko drew a charge to give Bentley the ball back. Mercy had one final possession after a Falcons turnover but Bentley held on for the win.
It was a matchup of nationally ranked squads with Bentley 18
th and Mercy 23
rd.
The Falcons trailed 13-11 after a goal by Mercy's Leah Hansen with 9:34 left in the fourth quarter.
But Bentley began to rally when
Maeve Johnson scored at the 6:12 mark. Johnson scored again at the 5:19 mark to tie the score 13-13 and the next goal was by Davis with 1:51 left to give Bentley the lead.
Bentley led 11-10 early in the 4
th quarter after a goal by Johnson, but the Mavericks netted three unanswered to take the 13-11 lead.
Johnson had eight goals, which is just one short of her career high of nine. She added two assists for 10 points, just one short of her career high.
Davis had a hat trick and Nat Dutkewych scored two goals and added nine draw controls.
