WALTHAM, Mass. – Riley Piromalli earned a complete-game win, and four Falcons totaled three hits each as the Bentley softball team beat Southern New Hampshire, 8-2, in the first game of a Northeast-10 doubleheader Wednesday afternoon. SNHU won the second game, 6-5.
Piromalli struck out seven and allowed just two earned runs to notch her fifth win of the season.
Jess Morrison,
Bella Burke,
Jordan Krause, and
Maddie Baker each went 3-for-4 in the win. Burke scored three times, and Krause drove in three runs.
Bentley quickly tagged the Penman in the first inning. Morrison led off with a single, and Burke promptly followed with an RBI triple. Krause, the next batter, delivered an RBI single to give the Falcons an early 2-1 lead.
Burke got a four-run rally started in the third inning with a one-out single. Krause followed with a single to move Burke into scoring position, and then Burke scored on a base hit by
Kim Saunders. Baker followed with a base hit of her own, easily plating Krause for a 4-1 lead.
Baker and Saunders moved up to second and third, respectively, when
Carly DiMento grounded out.
Hailey Feiler scored both runners with a double to left field. Â
Krause belted her fourth home run of the season – a two-run shot - in the sixth inning.
The Falcons nearly pulled off a comeback win in the second game. Entering the bottom of the seventh inning in a 6-4 deficit, Saunders drew a one-out walk. She scored on a double by Baker, bringing Bentley to within a run. Â
Baker put herself in scoring position with one out still on the board, but Bentley was unable to push across the tying run.
SNHU had a 3-1 lead entering the bottom of the second inning, but the Falcons took a 4-3 edge.
Becca Harris led off with a walk, and she scored on a triple hit by
Ava Lanza.
Lanza then scored when Morrison reached base on an error by the second baseman. Following a walk to Burke, Krause hit a single that allowed Morrison to score the go-ahead run.
The Penmen reclaimed the lead with a two-run fourth inning.
Breelin McDougal pitched three shutout innings out of the bullpen for Bentley, striking out two and yielding just two hits.
Bentley is on the road this weekend for NE10 doubleheaders at New Haven (April 5) and Southern Connecticut (April 6).
