Box Score STORRS, Conn. – Bentley University ended the first half of its season on a high-note with a 4-2 road win against UConn Friday night in Atlantic Hockey action at Freitas Ice Forum.
Bentley took the lead three different times on the evening, but they took it for good 4:43 into the third period as sophomore Jared Rickord (Skokie, Ill./Springfield Jr. Blues) netted his third of the season off a feed from senior Aaron Stonacek (Basehor, Kan./Fairbanks Ice Dogs).
Stonacek sealed the win for the Falcons with an empty-netter with 29 seconds left to give them their fifth win of the season, improving their record to 5-3-2 in Atlantic Hockey and 5-8-3 overall. The Huskies drop to 5-9-2 and 4-6-1.
Goaltender Branden Komm (Williamsville, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon) made 25 saves to pick up his fifth win of the year. It's the eighth time this season Komm has allowed two or fewer goals in a start.
With Bentley holding a 2-1 lead at the start of the third period, UConn quickly tied it up with sophomore Cole Schneider scoring 1:17 into the period. As they brought the puck into the offensive zone a two-on-one developed with Billy Latta skating down the right side. Latta fed a centering pass to Schneider, who knocked the puck in on the left post to knot the game at two.
After a scoreless first period, the Falcons netted the first goal of the game with freshman Alex Kubiak (Tinley Park, Ill./Chicago Steel) scoring 41 seconds into the second period on the power play. A bouncing puck found its way to Kubiak near the boards on the left wing, and his shot got past Huskies goalie Garrett Bartus to give Bentley the lead.
UConn though equalized at 6:43 off the stick of Latta. A two-on-one developed in the Huskies' offensive zone with Latta skating with the puck down the right side. Instead of passing it off Latta kept it for himself and beat Komm to the glove side.
Bentley though took the lead back just 40 seconds before intermission as they scored off a fortunate bounce. Joe Campanelli (Pierrefonds, Quebec/Westminster Prep) won a battle for the puck in the left corner and fed a pass through the slot that bounced off a UConn player's skate and past Bartus.
The Falcons are now off until New Year's Day when they visit Yale.
