Box Score GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Senior Cassie Cabral (Sayville,N.Y.) scored her fifth goal of the season 6:28 into the first overtime session, giving Adelphi University a 2-1 win over visiting Bentley University in Northeast-10 Conference field hockey Saturday afternoon on Long Island.
Adelphi (1-8, 1-1 NE-10) had the statistical edge in the first half (7-3 in shots, 5-1 in penalty corners), but it was Bentley who struck first. Senior Kaitlyn Marcinek (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS), who had been denied by Panther sophomore Briana Rubenstein's (Bayport, N.Y.) diving defensive save in the 43rd minute, used a backhand to give the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the 47th minute. The goal was her third of the season.
The lead stood up for about 14 minutes, until Adelphi freshman Molly Cuevas (San Jose, Calif.) knocked in a rebound to even the score at one apiece with 9:11 left in regulation. That proved to be the Panthers' only shot of the second half.
Cabral's game-winner, shot from the left of the cage, was assisted by junior Jamie Ackerman (Nesconset, N.Y.).
Senior Kristine Puzio (Holbrook, N.Y.) made two saves in the winning cause for Adelphi, and Bentley senior Julia Powell (Southbury, Conn./Pomperaug HS) registered three stops.
Bentley (4-4, 1-1 NE-10), which had only one penalty corner in the game, will complete its Sept. 18 suspended game with Assumption Friday night in Worcester. That game is tied at 1-1 heading into the second overtime.
