Blinn leads Bentley to four-set win at Mercy

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. – Elizabeth Blinn totaled nine blocks, eight kills, four service aces to lead the Bentley volleyball team to a 3-1 (16-25, 25-18, 25-11, 27-25) win at Mercy Thursday evening.

It was a slow start for the Falcons in the first set. Mercy opened the contest with a 4-0 run. Bentley managed to get to within 6-4, with of those four points courtesy of Mustang errors.

From there, Mercy put away five consecutive points and held a comfortable lead for the rest of the set and won it by a score of 25-26.

The teams went back and forth early in the second set, but Mercy held a 9-7 lead. However, a kill by Lauren McCloskey started a 5-0 run for the Falcons, giving them a 12-9 lead.

Bentley clung to a 17-15 edge when a kill by Rachel Vitko was the first point of a 7-0 run, as the Falcons won the second set, 25-18.

Bentley dominated the third set, 25-11, but the Mustangs still weren't going away quietly.

Neither team led by more than two points in the fourth set until Mercy took a 9-6 lead. Consecutive errors by the Mustangs allowed the Falcons to get back to within a point, but Mercy marched on to take a 13-10 advantage.

A Mustangs error slowed the charge, and instead flipped momentum to Bentley's favor to the tune of a 7-0 run. Blinn a Sophia Poehlein both put away a couple of kills during the run, as the Falcons took a 17-13 lead.

Bentley's lead was 23-18, but Mercy went on an improbable 6-0 run to take a 24-23 lead. A Mercy error tied the set, but the Mustangs quickly got the point back, 25-24. Bentley ended the match with three consecutive points. Caitlin Wunder put away a kill, Mercy committed an error, and Wunder put away another kill for match point.

Wunder finished the match with a team-high 10 kills, and Tory Vitko tallied 35 assists. It was the freshman's fourth match with 30+ assists. Poehlein added nine kills in the winning effort.

Bentley returns home to the Dana Center to host a tri-match Saturday, Oct. 26. The Falcons take on Wilmington (Del.) at 11 a.m., and then take on Southern New Hampshire at 3 p.m. (non-conference).
