WALTHAM, Mass. –
Stephen Castagna broke a 2-2 tie with a power play goal at 8:14 of the 3
rd period and the Falcons went on to a 4-2 victory over Sacred Heart at home on Friday night.
Castagna's extra-man tally gave the Falcons the lead, and freshman
Oskar Bakkevig iced it with an empty-net goal with 32 seconds left.
Bentley improved to 2-1 in Atlantic Hockey games and 3-3-1 overall.
Sacred Heart jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 59 seconds into the game on the first shot of the night, but after that they found it tough sledding against the Falcons defense and mustered just 18 shots the rest of the way.
At 16:58 of the first period,
A.J. Hodges tied the game with a power play goal with a shot from the top of the left faceoff circle after receiving a pass from
Sam Duerr.
Just 34 seconds later, Bakkevig put Bentley in front with his second goal of the season. Bakkevig gained possession just over the center line and skated into the offensive zone down the left wing. A nifty move around a SHU defender gave him space for a shot to the near post to beat Pioneers goalie Cullen DeYoung.
SHU tied the score with a power play goal with 36 seconds remaining in the second period off the stick of John Driscoll.
With a little over eight minutes gone in the third frame, Castagna's goal put Bentely in front for good. An initial shot on goal by
Ethan Leyh was saved, but Castagna was there in front of the net to score off the rebound for a 3-2 lead.
Bakkevig then scored the empty-netter with 32 ticks left with a shot from center ice.
These teams will play again on Saturday night in Fairfield, Connecticut at 7:00 pm as Bentley will look for the sweep.
