Box Score WALTHAM, Mass. – A buzzer-beating three by Post University senior forward Deng Deang (St. Cloud, Minn.) at the end of regulation forced overtime and the visiting Eagles went on to edge Bentley University, 91-86, in non-conference men's basketball Wednesday night on the Dana Center's Barbara Stevens Court. Two extra sessions were needed to determine a winner.
Bentley, now 1-1, led for virtually all of regulation and received 21 points apiece from junior guard
Cash McClure (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook HS) and sophomore forward
Cooper Farrall (Valparaiso, Ind./Culver Academies). Farrall established career-bests for both points and rebounds (10).
The Falcons twice opened a 16-point lead in the second half, including 49-33 with 13:11 left in regulation, and up to that point, contained a Post offense that averaged 86.5 points in its first two games.
Runs of 10-0 and 9-0 helped Post draw within one, 53-52, with just under five minutes left on the clock. That was the first of five times that the Falcon advantage shrunk to one, but Bentley was able to hold off the Eagles with a three-pointer from graduate guard
Aaron Latham (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS), who played the entire 50 minutes, and strong foul shooting (6-6 in the final 2:09).
After two free throws by sophomore
Dre Roman (Loiza, P.R.) restored the Falcon advantage to three, with 8.2 seconds left, Deang delivered the tying three-ball for Post.
Bentley never led in the first overtime and was down 75-73 with 24 seconds left following a driving lay-up by senior point guard Bol Akot (Manchester, N.H.). Following a Post rebound of a Falcon miss, senior guard Robert Sanders (Naugatuck, Conn.) went to the line with 6.3 left and missed the front end of a one-and-one. Farrall rebounded the ball and was fouled attempting a desperation three with 1.9 seconds left. He made the first, missed the second and nailed the third to knot the score at 75-all and extend the game for another five minutes.
With the second OT tied at 79, Post put together an 8-1 burst to take its biggest lead of the night, 87-80. McClure drained a pair of threes in the final 14 seconds but it was not enough for Bentley.
Deng and Akol led Post (3-0) with 26 and 22 points, respectively. Akot also had seven assists and five rebounds.
Farrall and McClure were joined in doubles by Latham, who finished with 12 points, four rebounds and four assists. Roman and graduate forward
Ivan Misic (Toronto, Ont.) followed with nine points apiece and the duo combined for 13 rebounds as well.
Bentley was forced by the aggressive Post defense into 20 turnovers and the Eagles converted those into 22 points. Sanders had four of his team's ten steals.
The Falcons had a slight edge in field goal percentage (45-44 percent) and rebounds (40-39) but saw the Eagles attempt 11 more shots, 75-64.
Bentley, 1-1, will look to bounce back Saturday when it opens the Northeast-10 schedule at Pace University.
