NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Jazzy Burke had a season-high 29 digs, and
Lauren McCloskey totaled a season-high eight blocks as the Bentley volleyball team flexed its defensive prowess in a 3-2 win (25-18, 18-25, 25-18, 23-25, 15-8) at New Haven Saturday.
The matchup between two of the top four teams in the Northeast-10 has postseason implications. Bentley improved to 7-2 in the NE10 with one match remaining in the regular season, and the Chargers fell to 6-2 in the NE10 with two matches left.
New Haven was limited to just a .098 attack percentage against Bentley. The Falcons improved their conference-leading opponent attack percentage to .116 for the season. Bentley entered the weekend ranked ninth in the nation for the category.
Holding a two sets to one lead, Bentley kept pace with the Chargers in the fourth set when the Falcons trailed by just one point, 13-12. That score, however, was the starting point for an 8-1 New Haven run as it forced a fifth and decisive set.
The Chargers scored two of the first three points in that fifth set, but a kill by
Rachel Vitko was the start of a 6-0 run for Bentley.
Caitlin Wunder put away two kills during the run, and Elizabeth Binn served up two aces.
New Haven got as close as 11-8, but Bentley closed out the victory with four consecutive points.
Wunder led the Falcons in kills with 11, while McCloskey, Vitko, and Blinn each provided eight.
Sophia Poehlein had nine kills in the win.
Tory Vitko totaled 35 assists for Bentley, making it her seventh consecutive match with at least 33 assists.
Bentey's regular season concludes at home, Nov. 15, when the Falcons host Saint Michael's for Senior Night.
