QUEENS, N.Y. – Elizabeth Blinn achieved something that no Falcon had done in 21 years as the Bentley volleyball team won matches against Queens (N.Y.) and Lewis Saturday. Queens (N.Y.) hosted both matches that saw Bentley push its winning streak to seven.
The Falcons beat Lewis in four sets (25-27, 25-17, 25-22, 25-20) in Bentley's second match of the day. Blinn totaled 12 blocks in the match, becoming the first Falcon since Erin Cavanaugh in 2003 to reach at least 12 blocks.
It was Blinn's second 10+ block performance in three contests – she had 10 blocks against Molloy Friday (Sept. 20).
Bentley, which had approximately 60 minutes of rest following its 3-0 triumph over Queens (N.Y.), lost to the first set to Lewis, 27-25. The Falcons quickly righted the ship by running out to a 4-0 lead in the second set. The Pilots briefly held the lead, 11-10, but a kill by
Sophia Poehlein sparked a 6-0 run for Bentley.
With each teams owning a set, Lewis held a 13-11 edge in the third frame. And once again, a Poehlein kill started a decisive run. This time, it was a 5-0 Bentley stretch to take a 16-13 lead. Lewis tied it up at 18, but consecutive kills by
Rachel Vitko gave the Falcons some breathing room. The Pilots answered with to back-to-back points, but straight kills by Luaren McCloskey, Poehlein, and
Tory Vitko kept Bentley ahead for the rest of the third set.
The fourth set was nearly even midway through, with Bentley holding a 14-13 edge. Consecutive errors by the Pilots followed by a McCloskey kills made a 17-13 advantage. Lewis got to within one point, 18-17, but its hopes were dashed when McCloskey, Poehlein, and
Caitlin Wunder put away consecutive kills.
Rachel Vitko had a match-high 15 kills, and Poehlein closely followed with 14. Wunder added 10 kills in the winning effort.
Tory Vitko totaled 25 assists and 19 digs, while
Jazzy Burke had a team-high 22 digs.
In Bentley's cleans sweep against Queens (N.Y.) (25-22, 25-13, 25-14), Poehlein finished with a team-high nine kills, and
Rachel Vitko added eight. Bentley attacked at a .357 clip while holding Queens to a lowly .027 mark.
