Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Falcons come up short against Dallas Baptist, East Central

DALLAS – Sophia Poehlein and Caitlin Wunder combined for 28 kills, while Tory Vitko amassed 32 assists, but the Bentley volleyball team lost to East Central, 3-1 (25-21, 19-25, 25-20, 25-21), in the Falcons' second match of Friday afternoon during the Dallas Baptist Tournament.

Poehlein, a freshman, put away 16 kills, and the graduate student Wunder added 12.

A trio of Falcons posted double-digit digs: Jazzy Burke and Ali Steussi with 12 each, and Natalie Thom with 10.

After losing the first set, Bentley found itself in a 5-1 hole to behind the second frame. But a 10-1 run, including two Wunder kills and a couple of Poehlein aces, allowed the Falcons to claim a 12-8 lead.

East Central quickly tied the second set, 12-12, with a 4-0 run. From there, neither team led by more than three points until a 4-0 Bentley run gave the Falcons a 22-17 lead. Poehlein tallied two kills during that stretch, and the Falcons closed out the set, 25-19, on another one of her aces.

In the first match Friday, Bentley lost to Dallas Baptist in three sets (25-15, 25-17, 25-17).

Poehlein put away nine kills for Bentley, one day after totaling eight kills in her collegiate debut against the same opponent. Fellow freshman Tory Vitko led the Falcons in both assists (21) and digs (9). Her older sister – senior Rachel Vitko – came away with seven kills.

Bentley concludes its Texas trip Saturday, Sept. 7, with an 11 a.m. match against Texas-Tyler.
