Adelphi Outlasts Bentley in OT, 91-85

GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – In a game that featured 18 lead changes and eight ties, conference-leading Adelphi University outscored the Bentley University Falcons 13-7 in overtime to edge the visitors, 91-85, in Northeast-10 men's basketball Tuesday night at the Center for Recreation and Sport.

Adelphi featured junior guard Dayshaun Walton (Albany, N.Y.), who hit a game-tying three with five seconds left in regulation and opened the extra session with two buckets in the first 33 seconds. He finished with 25 points, most coming via five three-pointers, and eight rebounds.

Graduate students Ivan Misic (Toronto, Ont.) and Aaron Latham (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS) headed a list of five double-figure scorers for Bentley, which played its third straight nail-biter and was coming off a walk-off win over Southern Connecticut State Saturday. Each had 17 points.

Bentley dropped to 10-8 overall and 7-5 NE10 after seeing its six-game road win streak halted. Adelphi, 14-1 since the start of December, improved to 19-5 overall and 11-2 conference.

Coach Jay Lawson's team, down 75-74 with 1:40 left in regulation after a Walton hook put his squad back in front, scored the next four to go up 78-75 with 25 seconds remaining. A shot clock-beating third-chance putback by junior guard Cash McClure (Readfield, Maine/Maranacook HS) with 40 seconds left returned the lead to Bentley and two free throws by Aaron with 25 on the clock made it a three-point game.

Following a timeout with 11.3 to play, the Panthers got the ball to Walton and his triple from the left wing with five seconds to play knotted the score. McClure got off an attempt from deep, but it was off the mark, sending Bentley to OT for the third time this season.

After Walton gave his team a four-point lead to start overtime, the Falcons made it a one-possession game three times, including 88-85 with 57 seconds left after a lay-up from junior forward Chase Clarke (Bloomfield, N.J./Newark Academy).

Walton answered with his fifth long ball of the game with 32 seconds to play and the Falcons were unable to connect the rest of the way, missing three shots.

The biggest differential of the game came with about seven minutes left in the first, when Adelphi used a 12-4 surge to go up eight at 32-24. Bentley countered with an 11-2 spurt to retake the lead, 35-34, and the two teams were never separated by more than five until overtime.

Latham, who leads Division II in minutes played, was on the court for 43:28 and had four assists and four rebounds in addition to 17 points. Misic made seven of 11 shots on his way to 17 and also had six rebounds.

McClure, with 13 points and nine rebounds, missed a double-double by a single board. Clarke provided 13 points, six rebounds and five assists off the bench, and sophomore forward Cooper Farrall (Valparaiso, Ind./Culver Academies) had 12 points and seven rebounds.

Adelphi also had five score in doubles with Walton followed by grad student Tavin Pierre Philippe (Freeport, N.Y.) and senior guard Andres Fulgencio (Teaneck, N.J.), with 19 and 18 respectively. Six-eight senior Jarnel Rancy (Middle Island, N.Y.) added 11 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks.

Adelphi had a 13-9 advantage in three-pointers and a 46-41 edge in rebounds. Turnovers and field goal percentage were about the same, and Bentley was hurt by missing eight of 18 free throws, including the front end of a one-and-one with 2:05 to play and a one-point lead.

The Falcons will look to bounce back Saturday when they play at New Haven.
