NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Niagara's Tyler Wallace scored with 1:05 left in overtime to give them a 3-2 victory over visiting Bentley on Friday night.
The Falcons earned a point in the Atlantic Hockey standings with the overtime defeat and Niagara notched two.
The defeat snapped Bentley's six-game unbeaten streak in Atlantic Hockey, which stood at 5-0-1 entering tonight. On the season their AHA record goes to 9-3-1 and 11-6-2 overall.
Tied 1-1 in the third period, the Falcons took the lead on captain
Ethan Leyh's team leading 8
th goal of the season, off a no-look pass by
Jimmy Doyle.
Doyle gained the zone after taking a pass from
Ryan Upson. As he drove in on net, he spun away from a defender and fed a backdoor pass to Leyh, who buried his shot for the goal at the 8:11 mark.
But 2:49 later, Niagara tied it on the first goal of the season by sophomore defenseman Ross Roloson.
Neither team scored over the remaining nine minutes of regulation to send the game to overtime.
In the extra period, Wallace's seventh goal of the season won it for the Purple Eagles.
Back in the first period, Bentley took a 1-0 lead on freshman
Oskar Bakkevig's 8
th goal of the year with 29 seconds left. After a shot by classmate
Oliver Salo was saved, Bakkevig gained control of the rebound and a fired a wrist shot from the edge of the left faceoff circle for the goal.
Niagara tied it 1-1 at 9:45 of the 2
nd period on a goal by Shane Ott.
Bentley ended the night with a 29-22 edge in shots.
These teams will close out their series on Saturday at 5:00 PM at Dwyer Arena.
