WALTHAM, Mass. – The historic season for Bentley men's soccer came to a close on Sunday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament after they fell to Gannon 2-1.
Making their second ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament and first since 1975, the Falcons took a 1-0 lead in the first half on a penalty kick goal by captain
Michael Haikal.
But Gannon scored twice in the second half and held on at the end to advance to the third round.
In a matchup of nationally ranked teams, Bentley 11
th and Gannon 14
th, the Falcons jumped in front on a penalty kick goal by Haikal in the 17
th minute. Gannon was called for a handball in the penalty area to award the PK to the Falcons. Haikal stepped up and drilled his shot into the back of the net for his eighth goal of the year.
Bentley held the 1-0 lead into halftime as they limited Gannon to just one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes.
In the second half however Gannon took the lead with two goals in 10 minutes.
Per Kristian Lauvstad tied it in the 55
th minute with a finish from 15 yards out.
In the 65
th minute Sverre Orten converted a PK to give them the lead.
Bentley pushed hard for the tying goal in the final minutes, which included bringing up keeper
Cam Hall for two corner kicks. They had four shots in the final two-plus minutes but could not break through.
The NE10 regular season champions for the first time since 1995, Bentley's final record stands at 11-3-4.
