BOCA RATON, Fla. – Freshman
David VanderZouwen had the first three-hit game of his collegiate career, but the Bentley baseball team lost to Molloy, 12-5, in 10 innings Monday. The game was played at Lynn University.
VanderZouwen finished the game 3-for-5 with two RBI and a double. The two-bagger in the fifth inning scored
Jack Matthews for Bentley's first run of the game. VanderZouwen hit an RBI single in the sixth inning to score
Patrick Purcell, and he singled in the 10
th inning.
The Lions had a 5-0 lead entering the bottom of the fifth inning. After hitting his RBI double, VanderZouwen came in to score on a single by
Tommy Bolton, cutting the deficit to 5-2.
The Falcons entered the seventh inning down by two runs, 5-3. With one out, Bolton reached base on an infield single and moved into scoring position on a throwing error.
Jared Berardino drew a walk, and then both he and Bolton moved up a base on a passed ball.
Stan DeMartinis III was intentionally walked to load the bases. The next batter, Purcell, earned a walk the old fashioned way to make it a 5-4 game. Finally,
Jake Maydak also drew a bases-loaded to even the score, 5-5.
Neither team gained much traction in the eighth and ninth innings, but Molloy erupted for seven runs in the 10
th.
Bolton, Berardino, and
Jimmy Mitchell finished the game with two hits, each. Bentley remains in Florida to take on Georgian Court Tuesday, March 11, at 10:30 a.m.
