MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – David VanderZouwen hit a grand slam and solo home run,
Stan DeMartinis III homered twice, and
Nick Pappas also hit a grand slam as the Bentley baseball team trounced Bridgeport, 20-6, Saturday afternoon.
Between the Bentley bats belting Bridgeport's pitching,
Sam Belliveau was outstanding in his first start (second appearance) as a Falcon. The graduate transfer from UMass- Amherst struck out nine batters in his six innings on the mound. He allowed two earned runs without issuing a walk. Belliveau holds a 2.70 ERA through his first 10.0 innings of the season.
The Falcons put six runs on the board in the second inning. The rally included Pappas' grand slam, and a solo shot by DeMartinis. It was Pappas' second homer of the season.
Bentley's four-run seventh inning included a solo homer by VanderZouwen.
The eighth inning ended with the Falcons holding a 13-6 lead. But if there was any doubt about a Bentley win at that point, the Falcons added another seven runs in the ninth. DeMartinis hit his second home run of the game, and third of the season, with Pappas on base.
VanderZouwen's ninth-inning grand slam was the emphatic exclamation point for Bentley.
DeMartinis, VanderZouwen, and
Tommy Goonan collected three hits in the win, and Pappas scored four times. Pappas was one of eight Falcons to score multiple runs against Bridgeport.
Bentley concludes its Myrtle Beach trip with a game against Mercy Sunday, Feb. 22, at 12 p.m.
