MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – Jared Berardino and
Stan DeMartinis III both went yard, but the Bentley baseball team came up just short against Mercy, 13-11, Sunday afternoon. It was the final game of the Falcons' weekend trip in Myrtle Beach.
Berardino and DeMartinis are both up to four home runs through Bentley's (3-4) first seven games of the season. Berardino has 11 RBI this season, and DeMartinis has 10.
Berardino's homer against Mercy (5-3) increased Bentley's lead to 7-5 in the bottom of the sixth inning. However, Mercy scored four runs in both the seventh and eighth innings to take a 13-8 lead.
The Falcons' comeback bid started when Berardino led off the bottom of the eighth inning with a double.
Nick Pappas was then hit by a pitch, and DeMartinis cleared the bases with a three-run homer that brought Bentley to within two runs.
Immediately following the homer run,
Brendan Sencaj tried to keep the rally going when he reached base with a single. However, Sencaj was ultimately stranded on base.
Still trailing by two runs in the ninth inning, Bentley went three up and three down in the final stanza.
Berardino went 3-for-5 in the game, while
Jimmy Mitchell and
David VanderZouwen both went 3-for-4. Mitchell scored three runs and drove in three.
The Falcons return to Florida in two weeks, where the six-game trip begins with consecutive single games against Post (March 6-7).
