BOCA RATON, Fla. – Brendan Sencaj crushed a grand slam, and
Stan DeMartinis III belted his conference-leading fifth home run of the season to the lead the Bentley baseball team to a 12-5 win over Post Friday. It was the Falcons' first game of their spring break trip to Florida.
DeMartinis' solo shot tied the game, 4-4, in the bottom of the fifth inning. The graduate student had 13 homers in 172 at-bats during his All-Northeast 10 First Team campaign last year. So far this season, his home run pace is more than double last year's output.
The Eagles took a one-run lead, 5-4, in the top of the seventh, but Bentley answered back – and then some - in the bottom of the inning.
Tommy Bolton and
Nick Pappas both hit singles for the Falcons to have two runners on with one out. DeMartinis was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Sencaj lifted a sacrifice fly to score Bolton and tie the game, 5-5.
With two outs on the board,
Curt Heath reached base with an infield single that loaded the bases once more.
Jimmy Mitchell brought in all three runners with a double, giving Bentley an 8-5 lead.
Bentley took advantage of another bases-loaded opportunity in the eighth inning. Bolton was hit by a pitch,
Jared Berardino hit a single, and DeMartinis walked to set up Sancaj's grand slam. It was his second home run of the season, and that one swing propelled Sencaj to No. 2 on the conference's leaderboard for RBI (14) this season.
DeMartinis, Heath, and Mitchell each finished with two hits, while DeMartinis scored three times.
Freshman
Dylan Lawrence earned his first-career collegiate victory after pitching four innings out of the bullpen. He allowed just one run on three hits.
Bentley and Post meet again in Boca Raton Saturday, March 7, at 2:30 p.m.
