WALTHAM, Mass. – Adelphi's Alexandra Leggio scored with 10 seconds remaining to give the #16 ranked Panthers a 19-18 victory over Bentley in a spirited back and forth game between the two teams.
Sophia Pope and
Callie Burchill both had a career high six goals for the Falcons.
Leggio's goal was the 12
th and final lead change of the afternoon. Seven of the lead changes came in the second half.
Bentley led 18-16 with 8:43 remaining after a goal by
Natalia Dutkewych, but the Panthers were able to score the final three goals of the game.
The Falcons battled back from 7-3 down in the second quarter and used runs of 5-1 and 7-2 to have the game tied 10-10 at halftime.
Pope had the first three goals of the run. The first two, both women-up, came just 36 seconds apart. After an Adelphi goal, Burchill scored two in a row at the 5:07 and 4:53 marks to tie the game 8-8.
Pope then finished the flourish with two more goals in a row, at 2:27 and 1:11, and the teams were tied 10-10 at halftime.
The teams traded runs in the third quarter with Bentley starting with a 2-0 spurt, followed by a 3-0 run by the Panthers and answered by two in a row for the Falcons. They then alternated goals, leaving the score at 16-15 in Bentley's favor at the start of the fourth quarter.
Adelphi's Ashley Kolomechuk scored the opening goal of the fourth quarter to knot the game at 16 at the 10:56 mark. But Burchill notched her sixth goal of the day just 17 seconds later, and Dutkewych scored at 8:43 to give Bentley a two goal lead.
Pope also had three assists on the afternoon for a career high nine points. Dutkewych had three goals and three assists and
Caitlin Keenan had three goals and two assists.
Bentley completed a season opening gauntlet of five ranked teams in the first six games. They next play on Wednesday at home against Felician at 3:00 pm.
