WALTHAM, Mass. – Sam Belliveau earned his seventh win of the season, and
Evan McCarthy was stellar out of the bullpen as the No. 18/24 Bentley baseball team completed a series sweep over Saint Michael's Sunday.
Bentley 10, Saint Michael's 6 (7 inn.)
Making his seventh start of the season,
Sam Belliveau improved to 7-0 to lead the Falcons to a 10-6 win in the first game Sunday. He was just one out shy of notching a complete game, but a three-run homer by Saint Michael's in the seventh and final inning ultimately brought an end to Belliveau's otherwise outstanding game.
Belliveau's outing began by retiring the first eight batters in order. He allowed only four hits through six innings, all of which were singles.
The potent Bentley (26-9, 18-4 NE10) offense wasted little time in flexing its muscle, as the Falcons scored four runs in the first inning.
Jared Berardino and
Nick Pappas hit consecutive RBI doubles, while
Brendan Sencaj and
Jimmy Mitchell each hit an RBI single in the first inning.
Bentley added another three runs in the second inning.
Tommy Bolton scored on a wild pitch, and
Stan DeMartinis III and Sencaj both had groundout RBIs.
Berardino finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs. Bolton scored three times during his two-hit game that included a walk. Pappas, Mitchell, and
Jake Maydak each had two hits in the win.
Bentley 5, Saint Michael's 2
Evan McCarthy struck out eight batters in four innings out of the bullpen, allowing Bentley to mount a comeback win over the Purple Knights.
McCarthy entered the game in the middle of the fifth inning with Bentley trailing, 1-0. He ended the fifth inning with a strikeout, and then he struck out the side in the sixth inning. McCarthy struck out two batters in each of the seventh and eighth innings.
The Bentley bats finally broke through in the seventh inning.
Curt Heath led off with a single. A sacrifice bunt by
Jimmy Mitchell, followed by a single from
Brian Hersh, quickly put Heath on third base. With runners on the corners,
Jake Maydak ripped a single to left field to tie the game, 1-1. Pinch runner
Chase Mendela moved from first to third on Maydak's hit, and he scored the go-ahead run when
Tommy Bolton grounded out.
The Falcons added three more runs in the eighth inning.
Nick Pappas led off with a walk, and a balk put him in scoring position. A single by Heath allowed Pappas to score. Heath moved to third base when Mitchell reached base on an error. The Saint Michael's miscue put two Falcons in scoring position, and
Tommy Goonan brought them both home by hitting a single to centerfield.
Bentley has a midweek home game against Assumption Wednesday, April 15, at 3:30 p.m.
