Bentley Upends Saint Michael's 8-5 on Senior Night

Box Score

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Bentley men's lacrosse team picked up its third straight win on Saturday night, knocking off Saint Michael's 8-5 on Senior Night. Sophomore Matt Brigham (Portsmouth, R.I./Portsmouth Abbey) and freshman Chris Wiggins (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) each had two goals.

With the score tied 3-3 at halftime, the Falcons got the only two goals of the third quarter. 32 seconds into a Saint Michael's penalty, senior Cutler Dimond (Marblehead, Mass./Tabor) fed senior Bobby Hinds (West Hartford, Conn./Conard) for a man-up goal at the 7:54 mark to give them a 4-3 lead.

Then with just one second left in the quarter, Brigham found Wiggins for a goal on the near post to give Bentley a 5-3 lead going into the final quarter.

Saint Michael's scored just 1:50 into the fourth to cut Bentley's lead to 5-4, with the goal coming from midfielder Matt Casella. But the Falcons took over from that point. Dimond scored unassisted at 8:17, followed by Brigham's second of the game with 6:29 to play as they led 7-4. Senior Mike Giorgetti (Framingham, Mass./Framingham) tacked on a goal at the 2:51 mark as Bentley extended its lead to 8-4. A Saint Michael's goal just 32 seconds later proved to not influence the outcome.

Junior goalie Daniel Shaughnessy (Sudbury, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) came up with 10 saves to earn the win.

Bentley overcame 13 turnovers in the first half to have the game tied at halftime. Senior attack Matt Dente (Reading, Mass./Reading) opened the scoring 2:39 into the game, before Saint Michael's Mark Yetter tied it a little over a minute later.

Brigham then gave Bentley a 2-1 lead with a man-up goal at the 5:04 mark, before SMC tied it from a goal by midfielder Ben Overslaugh.

Each team scored just once in the second quarter. Taylor Wallace scored for the Knights at the 12:38 mark. Another 10 minutes passed before another goal was scored, but it was Bentley's Wiggins finding the back of the net, ensuring the game went into halftime tied.

With the win, Bentley improves to 6-4 overall and 5-3 in the NE-10, while the Purple Knights drop to 4-6 and 3-5. Bentley will go for its fourth straight win on Wednesday night when they visit Merrimack.
