Waltham, Mass. –
Max Beckford made 21 saves to earn the win in his first NCAA start and
Arlo Merritt scored twice in a 3-1 victory over LIU.
Beckford had a shutout going for 57-plus minutes until the Sharks scored a 6-on-4 goal.
The teams battled in a scoreless tie for the first 30-plus minutes of action until Merritt's goal at 10:39 of the 2
nd period gave the Falcons the lead, assisted by
Nick Bochen and
Ethan Leyh.
The game stayed 1-0 until
Kellan Hjartarson lit the lamp at 8:06 of the 3
rd period. Leyh had an initial shot on goal that was saved but Hjartarson was there on the doorstep to score off the rebound.
Late in the game LIU was on the power play and pulled its goalie for a 6-on-4 advantage. A goal by Carter Rapalje at 17:07 of the 3
rd frame broke-up the shutout bid and made it a 2-1 game.
But 36 seconds later Bentley put the game away when Merritt scored his second of the night. Nik Armtstrong-Kingkade had the assist after he feathered a pass over to Merritt who ripped a shot from below the left faceoff dot.
Bentley improved to 1-2-1 with the win. They travel to Army West Point next weekend to open Atlantic Hockey play.
