PLEASANTVILLE, N.Y. – After Bentley University overcame a 14-point second half deficit to forge a tie, Pace University ran off 11 consecutive points and went on to best the visiting Falcons, 73-61, in Northeast-10 Conference men's basketball Saturday afternoon at the Goldstein Athletics Center.
Bentley, which was opening its conference schedule, dropped to 1-2 overall. Pace remained unbeaten, improving to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the NE10.
The Falcons were led by graduate point guard
Aaron Latham (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS) and the sophomore duo of forward
Cooper Farrall (Valparaiso, Ind./Culver Academies) and guard
Dre Roman (Loiza, P.R.).
Farrall posted his second straight double-double, finishing with 19 points, 10 rebounds and two steals. Roman scored a career-high 14 points and Latham finished with 12 points, four assists and three steals.
Pace was led by graduate point guard Tray Alexander (Freeport, N.Y.), who put up a 16-point, 12-assist double-double. He was directly involved in 20 of his team's 28 field goals in the contest.
Hot shooting early helped the Setters jump out to a 21-11 lead nine minutes into the game. Pace made 9 of its first 14 field goals and had a .667 field goal percentage during the first 12-plus minutes.
The second of Latham's three trifectas brought Bentley to within three, 27-24, with about seven minutes left in the first half. Pace responded with a 9-2 spurt to go up ten, 36-26, with two minutes until the break.
After falling behind by 14 early in the second, the Falcons put together a 19-5 run to even the score at 53 apiece with 9:22 to play. Cooper had nine during the stretch and Roman added six.
The next 11 points went up on the Setter side of the scoreboard as Bentley went about three-and-a-half minutes without a point. The Pace charge was led by junior Jabari Nurse (Randolph, Mass.) and junior forward Jaden Kealey (Center Moriches), who combined for nine of the 11.
Bentley was outshot 51-37 percent and outscored in the paint, 32-24. The Falcons had a slight edge in three-pointers, 8-7, and rebounds (35-33), but were outscored from the line, 10-7.
Alexander's 16 points were matched by Nurse, and Kealey followed with 15.
Bentley will return home to host Adelphi University Wednesday at 7:30 pm.
