GARDEN CITY, N.Y. – Bentley advanced to the semifinals of the Northeast 10 Field Hockey Championship with a 2-1, shootout victory over Adelphi in the quarterfinals on Monday night.
Bentley won the shootout 2-0 after the fourth round. Goalkeeper
Erin McGuinness denied all four Adelphi attempts and
Meagan Hayes and
Nicole Hartz scored for Bentley.
Adelphi went first and their opening shooter was Lana Mignon De Wet. McGuinness denied her backhanded shot from close range to give Bentley an early advantage.
Hayes was Bentley's first shooter and she scored with a spinning forehand shot to make it 1-0.
McGuinness next denied Emiline Biggin with a kick save, and Hartz scored after maneuvering around Adelphi goalie Allison Gregory to make it 2-0.
Adelphi's third shooter was Amanda Lee, and McGuinness dove to poke the ball away before Lee could get a shot off.
Gracie Moore was denied on Bentley's next attempt to keep it 2-0 after three rounds.
That left it to Kelly Johnson to keep Adelphi alive and McGuinness denied two shots by her to seal the win.
In regulation, Bentley took a 1-0 lead at the 40:13 mark when Moore scored her sixth goal of the season after receiving a centering pass from the right wing by
Emma Halas.
Adelphi tied it 1-1 with 5:18 remaining on a goal by Kylie Peregoy off a penalty corner.
Neither team scored in 20 minutes of overtime to send it to a shootout.
The Falcons will now face the top seed Assumption in the semifinals on Thursday in Worcester.
