WORCESTER, Mass. – Bentley dropped an overtime heartbreaker to Assumption 3-2 in the semifinals of the Northeast 10 Field Hockey Championship on Thursday night.
Bentley's
Gracie Moore scored with 2:09 left in regulation to knot the score 2-2 and send the game to overtime.
But the top seeded Greyhounds won it 3:55 into overtime when Julia Carbone scored.
Trailing 2-1 late in the game, the tying goal was started by
Libby Harrison playing in a ball from the right wing into the circle.
Emily Stagnone was first to it and shuffled a pass to Moore, who snuck behind the Assumption defense and lifted a backhander over Assumption's goalie to tie the score.
Falcons goalie
Erin McGuinness made a save on a shot by Mia Salah in the final seconds, one of her seven saves on the night, to keep the game tied and send it overtime 2-2.
Assumption got the winning goal in OT when Carbone tapped in the ball in front of the net after a lofted pass by Salah.
Bentley's first goal of the night came from
Emma Halas at the 29:22 mark, which tied the game 1-1 after the Greyhounds took the lead off a goal by Elle Murray at 25:20.
The goal came off a penalty corner and was assisted by
Lida Coco, who fired a shot towards the cage and Halas deflected it in for her second goal of the year.
Assumption took the lead back at 2-1 on a goal by Carbone at 41:36, and the score stayed that way until Moore's equalizer with 2:09 left.
The Greyhounds will play Saint Anselm in the finals on Sunday.
