Lipe entered Bentley as an undergraduate in 1973 and never left. Following his graduation with a Bachelor of Science degree, he took over as the Sports Information Director in the summer of 1977. In 2020 his title was changed to Director of Athletic Communications.
Following his semi-retirement in July, 2023, Lipe stayed with Bentely as a Sports Information Specialist. He is in his 53rd consecutive year on the Waltham, Mass., campus.
Lipe's relationship with football goes back decades, starting with Bentley's club football program in the late '70's and into the 80's. He was the PR director for the club league, devoting every Fall Sunday of his life to meticulously compiling league stats by phone call and hand. For decades Lipe, along with his wife Rosanne, has been coordinator of reservations for the annual NEFW banquet. He was the Information Director for the Northeast-10 from 1980-1998 and for the Eastern Football Conference from 1997-2000.
The list of awards Lipe has received is nearly as long as his tenure at Bentley. He was inducted into the Bentley Hall of fame in 1993, and in 2002 he was elected to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Hall of Fame. He is one of the original inductees into the Northeast 10 Hall of Fame and the Northeast 10 media Award presented annually is named in his honor. In addition to many non-football specific awards, Lipe has been honored with the Elmore "Scoop" Hudgens Award presented by the All[1]America Football Foundation and the Bob Kenworthy Award from the Metropolitan New York Football Writers. The Jack Grinold Media/SID Award presented by MasterSports, a regional organization that promoted college football, is also on his resume'.
Lipe is the fourth Bentley individual to be honored by the NEFW with the Carens Award. Former head football coaches Hal Kopp (1989) and Peter Yetten (2009), and athletic director Bob DeFelice (2017), are the previous Falcon recipients.
The award has been presented since 1952. Any persons wishing to attend the NEFW Banquet can make reservations on-line by clicking
