WALTHAM, Mass. – Clutch goals in the fourth quarter by
Sophie Manchester and
Makenzie Dutch propelled #4 seed Bentley to a 4-2 victory over #5 seed Southern New Hampshire in the quarterfinals of the NE10 Field Hockey Championship on Tuesday night.
With the game tied 2-2 with just over eight minutes remaining, Manchester's goal proved to be the game-winner. Manchester deflected in a shot from outside the circle by
Gracie Moore for the goal.
With 4:05 remaining, Dutch blasted in the insurance goal to give Bentley a 4-2 lead. Off a penalty corner that was sent in by
Lindsey Jacobs, Dutch rocketed a shot from long distance into the cage for the goal and a two-goal cushion.
SNHU took an early lead 4:41 into the game on Zoe Demers's 11
th goal of the year.
But with 1:33 left in the opening quarter, Moore's 12
th of the year tied the game. Off a penalty corner, Dutch dribbled to the edge of the circle and passed to Moore who slid a backhand shot into the cage.
With 4:22 remaining before halftime, another penalty corner led to a goal by
Madeline Krepelka for a 2-1 lead. The corner was sent in by Jacobs to
Sheila Mullins who fed a quick pass to Dutch. Dutch then directed a shot towards the cage that Krepelka tipped-in for her eighth goal of the season.
The Falcons stayed in front 2-1 until early in the 4
th quarter, when the Penmen tied it on a goal by Minke van de Poll.
But just over four minutes later, Manchester's goal was the winner for the Falcons.
Bentley (12-7) advances to the semifinals for the second straight season, where they will meet the top seed Assumption on Friday.
