WALTHAM, Mass. – Brendan Sencaj hit a walk-off single to complete the Bentley baseball team's comeback win against Assumption in the first game of a Northeast-10 doubleheader Saturday afternoon.
The Falcons trailed 8-3 entering the home half of the ninth, but it was Sencaj who started – and ended – the winning rally. Sencaj led off the ninth with a walk, and
Stan DeMartinis III followed by doing the same. Assumption was called for catcher's interference during
Jimmy Mitchell's at-bat, and suddenly the Falcons had the bases loaded with nobody out.
Two batters later,
Jack Matthews hit a two-run single to cut the deficit to 8-5. Mitchell came in to score when
David VanderZouwen hit into a fielder's choice, and Matthews moved into scoring position on the play.
For the moment, Bentley had two runners on base while down by two, 8-6. But a double hit by
Parker Coleman brought Mitchell and VanderZouwen home to tie the game.
Coleman advanced to third base when
Jake Maydak hit a single. Two batters later, Sencaj ended the game with a two-out single that easily scored Coleman.
Sencaj finished the game 3-for-5 and he score three times. Mitchell and Coleman both went 2-for-4.
GAME 2
The Falcons entered the fifth inning trailing Assumption, 4-3, but scored six unanswered the rest of the way to win game two 9-4 and sweep the doubleheader.
Freshman
Jake Maydak went 3-5 with an RBI and went 2-3 with an RBI and three runs scored.
Timmy Orie pitched three innings of scoreless relief to close out the victory.
In the second inning, Bentley put two runners on base when Sencaj and Mitchell both drew walks, and consecutive Assumption errors allowed both Falcons to score.
In the third frame Coleman led off the fourth inning with a single, and he advanced into scoring position thanks to a sac bunt by
Rene Nunez. Coleman moved up one more base on a single by
Tommy Bolton. A single by Sencaj allowed Coleman to easily score while Bolton sprinted to third base.
The fifth inning saw Mitchell led off with a single and move to second base on a wild pitch. Consecutive Assumption errors allowed Maydak and
Patrick Purcell to reach base while Mitchell came into score. Following a walk to Mathews, the next two Falcons struck out. Another wild pitch allowed Maydak to score, and Bolton smacked a clutch triple to plated two runs and gave Bentley a 6-4 lead.
Bentley added two more runs in the eighth innings thanks to an RBI double by Mitchell, who then came in to score on a single by Maydak.
