MANCHESTER, N.H. – The Bentley baseball team and Southern New Hampshire combined to play 29 innings in a Northeast-10 doubleheader Friday night. SNHU won the first game, 6-3, in 15 innings, and the Falcons won the second game, 4-2, in 14 innings.

Bentley 3, SNHU 6 (15 inn.)
Pat Heber allowed only two earned runs and struck out nine in an eight-inning start, but the Penmen won the first game with a walk-off three-run homer in the 15
th inning.
Heber was shaky in the first inning, yielding a run thanks to a double followed by a base hit, but he settled into a groove from there on. At one point he retired 11 consecutive batters, and his only blemish after the opening stanza was a solo home run.
SNHU held a 2-0 lead entering the fifth inning. In that frame,
Jake Maydak lifted a ball to right field where an error allowed him to reach third base.
Patrick Purcell followed with a sac fly that allowed Maydak to score Bentley's first run.
Bentley took a 3-2 lead in the ninth inning, when the Falcons rallied for two runs with two outs. The ninth began with a couple of groundouts, but
Jared Berardino kept the inning alive by hitting a double. An infield single by
Nick Pappas put runners on the corners, but Pappas stole second and a throwing error by the catcher on the play allowed Berardino to score the tying run.
Pappas then stole third base, and
Jimmy Mitchell drew a walk to put runners on the corners once more. Maydak delivered a single to the right side, allowing Pappas to score the go-ahead run, 3-2. Â
SNHU evened the score in the bottom of the ninth inning, and both sides were held scoreless up until the 15
th inning. Bentley had a good opportunity to scored in the 12
th inning when Purcell led off with a single. An error allowed him to take second base, and he moved up to third with two outs.
Â
Bentley 4, SNHU 2 (14 inn.)
Five Bentley pitchers combined to yield two unearned runs, and the Falcons pushed across two runs in the 14
th inning to win the second game of Friday's doubleheader.
Freshman
Zach Eigenbrod got the start for Bentley, and he struck out eight batters through 6.1 innings. SNHU scored twice in the seventh inning, both runs aided by defensive miscues.
Gabe White (1.2 IP),
Timmy Orie (2.0 IP),
Keegan Antelman (3.0 IP), and
Joey Sangiuolo (1.0 IP) combined to limit SNHU to only two hits through the game's final 7.2 innings. Antelman earned the win – his second of the season. Sangiuolo was credited with his first save this spring.
The top of the 14
th inning began with
Brendan Sencaj getting hit by a pitch. He moved into scoring position a wild pitch, and touched home plate when Maydak belted a double to right-center field.
Maydak tagged up and moved to third base when Berardino flied out to right field, and
Stan DeMartinis III provided an insurance by ripping an RBI double down the left field line.
The Falcons and Penmen get some much needed rest Saturday. The teams conclude their weekend series in Manchester Sunday (April 6).
