WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley scored three goals in the first half en route to a 3-1 victory over Assumption in the first round of the NE10 Men's Soccer Championship.
Antonio Di Gaudio,
Michael Cagno and
Gamaliel Ortiz Rivas were the goal scorers for the #3 seed Falcons, who advanced to the NE10 semifinals for the second straight season.
In the semifinals on Wednesday, they will either visit the #2 seed AIC or host the #7 seed Adelphi. That match kicks off at 7:00 pm on Saturday night.
Di Gaudio gave the Falcons a 1-0 lead in the ninth minute with a goal off a corner kick.
Wynn Hammond was first to it with a header from close range that was saved, but Di Gaudio was there for the rebound inside the six-yard box.
In the 35th minute Cagno made it 2-0 for Bentley with his fourth goal of the year. Ortiz Rivas cut into the penalty area and fed a pass to Veloria, who spotted Cagno for the finish.
Ortiz Rivas then scored himself eight minutes later after he capitalized off an Assumption turnover as they attempted to play out from their own end. Ortiz Rivas intercepted a pass and strode in on goal for the solo finish and a 3-0 lead
Bentley controlled the game the rest of the way, and only a Greyhounds goal with 58 seconds left prevented the shutout.
