WALTHAM, Mass. – Senior
Cash McClure nabbed a double-double on Senior Night, but the Bentley men's basketball team lost to Southern New Hampshire, 67-64, Wednesday night. It was the final game of the regular season.
Before tipoff, the Falcons celebrated senior
Joe Carroll,
Chase Clarke, and McClure. The latter senior scored 19 points and pulled down 12 rebounds.
Ivan Misic totaled 14 points and seven boards for Bentley (19-8, 12-6 NE10), and
Cooper Farrall scored in double figures with 10 points.
Bentley's defense held the Penmen (14-13, 8-10 NE10) to just 35.8-percent shooting from the floor, but the Falcons suffered a rare loss on the turnover front. Bentley turned the ball over 13 times to SNHU's eight.
Bentley held a double-digit lead, 62-52, when Farrall scored in the paint with 4:47 left in regulation. From there, however, Bentley was held scoreless for more than four consecutive minutes.
The Falcons were clinging to a one-point lead, 62-61, but SNHU hit a 3-pointer to go up by two points with 52 seconds remaining. Bentley's ensuing possession came up empty, and SNHU went to the line for a one-and-one. The Penmen made the first attempt, but missed the second, leaving it a one-possession game, 65-62, with 31 seconds left.
On the other end of the floor, the SNHU defense pressured the perimeter, allowing McClure to drive to the basket for an easy two points to bring Bentley's deficit down to 65-64.
Once again, the Penmen went to the line for a one-and-one opportunity. And once again, SNHU missed the second attempt. Neither team got a clean rebound off the rim, and there was a mad scramble on the floor for the ball. Nobody gained possession on the court, and the officials determined that the ball went out of bounds off of Bentley.
SNHU was sent back to the free-throw line with a 66-64 lead. This time, the team had two attempts with seven seconds left in regulation. But still, the Penmen left the door open once more by missing yet another free-throw.
Following the made free-throw, the inbounds pass went to McClure. He was able to sprint down the floor with the ball, but his pull-up 3-point attempt at the buzzer went off the rim.
Bentley and SNHU have a rematch back in Waltham this Saturday, Feb. 28. This time, a lot more is at stake. The teams will battle it out in the first round of the NE10 Championship. Bentley is the #2 seed, and SNHU is the #7 seed. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
