WORCESTER, Mass. – Freshman pitcher
Dylan Lawrence was superb in his first-career collegiate start, but the No. 18/24 Bentley baseball team lost at Assumption, 5-3, Wednesday afternoon.
Lawrence struck out a season-high seven batters through his five innings on the hill. He allowed just one earned run on four hits.
Bentley (22-9, 14-4 NE10) got on the board in the top of the first inning. The Falcons had two runners in scoring position after
Jared Berardino drew a walk and
Nick Pappas hit a double. A wild pitch allowed Berardino to score and give the Falcons a 1-0 lead.
Neither team scored again until the fifth evening, when Assumption (8-20, 4-14 NE10) tied the game by scoring its first run. They Greyhounds rallied for three runs in the following stanza to pull away for the win.
Bentley cut its deficit to 4-2 when
Brendan Sencaj hit a sacrifice fly that scored Pappas in the seventh inning. The Falcons' third and final run of the game was scored in the eighth inning, when
Jake Maydak was awarded home plate on a balk.
Tommy Goonan went 2-for-3 at the dish for Bentley, and he drew a walk. Goonan was the only Falcon with multiple hits. However,
Tommy Bolton, Pappas, Sencaj, and
Curt Heath each reached base twice with a hit and a walk.
Bentley returns home to host Saint Michael's for four games, April 11-12.
